Barry Crimmins is best known as a political satirist and as the producer of comedy shows at two of Boston’s fabled clubs: The Ding Ho and Stitches. His work as the cornerstone of the explosion of Boston comedy is a highlight of Fran Solamita’s 2006 documentary: When Standup Stood Out.
Bobcat Goldthwait’s 2015, Sundance -selected, critically acclaimed and award winning documentary Call Me Lucky tells Barry’s life story in a way only a dear friend and brilliant filmmaker could. The film covers Barry’s work as both a comic and activist, with special emphasis on his efforts on behalf of child abuse victims and survivors.
Crimmins is the author of Never Shake Hands With a War Criminal, a collection of essays for Seven Stories Press. He was a contributing essayist for the Boston Phoenix for over twenty years.
Mr Crimmins received the Peace Leadership Award in 1991 from Mobilization for Survival. The award was presented by Noam Chomsky. In 1994 Barry was honored along with Maya Angelou with the Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey and Wellesley College. Barry’s friend Howard Zinn did the presenting that day.
Barry was a producer, reporter and senior writer for Air America Radio from 2003 through 2006.
His work as an activist, journalist and performer has taken him everywhere from the American campaign trail to war zones in Central America to Camp Casey on the perimeter of the George W. Bush compound in Crawford, Texas.
Barry Crimmins has toured with Jackson Browne, Steven Wright, Billy Bragg, Dar Williams, Utah Phillips, Warren Zevon to name a few. The acts he has appeared with on various occasions, including Odetta, Kris Kristofferson, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Patti Griffin, Harry Belafonte and well, it goes on and on, represent generations of electrifying talent.
